Predator Sympathizer
Tyler, the Creator built his early career off some of the most disturbing lyrics in rap. Songs openly describing rape, violence toward women,
and loaded with homophobic slurs. His debut work was so controversial that multiple countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand,
outright banned him from entering because of the violent, misogynistic, and hateful content of his music.
It was during this period, while Tyler was still notorious for those lyrics and the bans that came with them, that Kali Uchis chose to align herself with
him. This wasn’t just a casual feature; she associated her brand and career with a man who had become infamous for misogyny and predatory themes. That choice
speaks volumes when you place it next to her relationship with Young Gleesh, a convicted sex offender, where she admitted his guilt in court yet still pleaded for leniency.
The pattern becomes even darker when looking at Tyler and Kali’s collaboration, “FUCKING YOUNG / PERFECT.” The song centers around a grown man fantasizing
about being with an underage girl, and Kali literally sings the role of that girl, lending her voice to normalize and aestheticize a predatory narrative.
For a female artist to willingly play the part of a sexualized child in such a song is disturbing on its own. When placed in the context of her history of
standing beside abusers, protecting men guilty of sexual assault, and aligning with misogynistic collaborators, it becomes even more damning and reinforces
a clear anti-women stance.
Rather than empowering women or standing against exploitation, Kali Uchis has repeatedly chosen to involve herself with men who embody it, enabling their
behavior and embedding it into her own artistic output.
